The Importance Of Breathıng Properly Through The Nose

Patients with nasal congestion usually breathe through the mouth and the main complaint is mouth breathing. So, is the nose really important in breathing? Let’s answer this question by explaining the functions of the nose.

The task of the nose is not only to send the air to the lungs, but also to ensure that the air presented to the lungs is of a certain quality. The air is filtered and cleaned as it passes through the nose, in addition, the nasal flesh inside the nose warms the air and brings it to 36 degrees, even if the outside air is dry, it becomes 100% saturated with moisture when it passes through the nose. In addition, it allows us to smell and makes our voice unique to us.

My patients with nasal congestion tell me that they cannot sleep well after going to bed at night, and that they experience dry mouth in the morning because they have to breathe through their mouths. In this case, we can say that the first rule of healthy sleep is a healthy nose.

Again, as a result of mouth breathing, the palate and pharynx areas are constantly dry, and the flu and upper respiratory tract infections of these people are more severe and last longer. This situation impairs the patient’s quality of life and concentration on their work.

The speech of the patient with nasal congestion is also affected. When a patient with nasal congestion needs to make a long speech or make a presentation, s/he cannot speak comfortably because s/he can both speak and breathe through his mouth frequently, this may cause dizziness due to frequent and deep sighs. This situation affects the presentability of the person very seriously. I am of the opinion that the charisma of a manager who speaks through the nose and often with a deep sigh will not be enough.

When nasal congestion becomes chronic, the body will be affected by this after a while and the effort capacity will decrease. This situation definitely affects the person’s activity and sexual life in a negative way and causes a decrease in performance in daily activities.
